HELLO GOODBYE
In this entertaining romantic comedy, French acting greats Gérard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant (The Secrets) play Alain and Gisèle, a middle-aged Parisian couple who give up their enviable lifestyle and move to Israel in the hope of reawakening their Jewish identity. The catalyst for this midlife sea change is their only son's decision to marry a Catholic girl - in a church, no less! But even still, as a barely religious French-Jewish gynæcologist, Alain still needs to be cajoled and convinced. The cultural obstacles they face threaten to force the couple apart as their upper-middle-class ambitions melt in the Mideast sun. Will Israeli culture bring them closer together or back into the reality they left behind? Alain is promised a job at a Tel Aviv hospital, but when that falls through he is forced to find a new way to make a living, while navigating a new language and missing more than just his favourite French soccer team. Meanwhile, Gisèle, a dedicated convert to Judaism, falls in love with Israel and its people almost immediately, developing a close friendship with a handsome rabbi (Lior Ashkenazi from Walk on Water). This is a charming and at times hilarious story of spontaneous adventures during a midlife crisis.
