LEAVE THE STONES THERE
As the daughter of Holocaust survivors, Melbourne journalist Julie Szego grew up with the death camps as a casual topic of conversation. At times, it was all too much. She resented the shadow of her parents' past in wartime Hungary falling over her happy, comfortable life in Australia. She was blessed with good fortune, so why the sense of unease lurking beneath the everyday? Now an adult, and herself a mother, Julie struggles to better accept her inheritance. She helped her father write his memoirs and regularly explores the Holocaust's legacy in her newspaper columns. And then, a few years ago, she joined her parents on a pilgrimage to their childhood villages of Korosladany and Mezobereny. She sets out on this journey with some misgivings. After all, what do you get from visiting places haunted by the ghosts of history? What lessons can you possibly learn? Julie wonders if she can ever really hope to unravel the mysteries of the past. To be introduced by Janos Zoltan & Julie Szego.
